A guide to warehouse space planning & storage solutions

Warehouse Space Planning & Storage Solutions

In the ever-growing industries of logistics, transportation and storage, it is imperative that companies find the right solution to fulfil their particular storage requirements. It could be that a relocation to a bigger space is the ideal solution; you could rent out space in another’s facility, or even strategically adapt your own storage set-up to accommodate new stock and product types. However you choose to do it, you’re going to need a storage solution that works best for you, and that’s where we come in!

Our friends at Whichwarehouse have kindly allowed us at SEC Storage to contribute to their fantastic blog, and showcase a little of what we do and how it can benefit you and your operation. Whichwarehouse will help to identify and secure the space you need, and we can help you plan, optimise and fill it with a dynamic and adaptable storage solution. The perfect combination.

We’ve worked with clients all over the country in different capacities to deliver effective, space saving solutions, and we’ve even won an SHD Award in the process for fitting out a major 3PL’s new storage facility in Milton Keynes (pictured below).

Warehouse Space Planning: Plan from the Beginning.

So how can we help? Well, SEC Storage offers a full product and warehouse appraisal service (including space planning) that can help determine the best solution for your storage needs. At the initial stage, our experts can identify the system(s) that will work best for you, and provide you with a set of plan view drawings and a detailed breakdown of costings, (all free of charge).

Take for example our client, a leading food storage and container system company who were moving into their new 47,000 sq/ft approx. distribution facility. They needed a solution that would maximise the cube without impacting overall operations. After the initial appraisal and planning stage, we found that the ideal solution would be to utilise double-deep racking to achieve a higher pallet capacity than traditional racking would. Although a VNA (very narrow aisle) system would typically be advised for installation, in this scenario, SEC was able to advise the best outcome at the earliest stage, crafting a solution that left our client most happy.

“We are very pleased with the outcome of this project and the work carried out by SEC. They understood our requirements, controlled the project well from start to finish and delivered the end result on time.”

Space Optimisation: Challenge Your Space

Of course, moving into an entirely new facility isn’t always possible. Space can be found elsewhere, or even repurposed and rented to others within existing premises. Another client of ours, a leading sports equipment retailer who additionally specialises in the storage and distribution of high end, electronic sports goods had this exact need: to find additional space within the facility without having to expand their overall warehouse footprint. Following a significant feasibility study and design process, it was found that a multi-tier mezzanine floor picking structure could be built on the space restrictive area, without impacting the ground floor loading bay or nearby VNA operation. The introduction of a dynamic storage system provided a significant uplift in pick rate and therefore operational cost savings.

“SEC have worked with us on a number of projects, and their ability to come up with a range of cost effective solutions to any given problem is at least as important as their track record in delivering on time and to budget.”

Of course, each and every project needs a personal approach, and that is what we pride ourselves on: our ability to offer a complete turnkey solution, fully managed and implemented from the design and planning stage, all the way through to supply and installation that is uniquely tailored to your needs, no matter how big or small your operation is.
