Though the industry ceased in the latter half of the twentieth century, Wigan Pier’s collection of warehouses and wharfs (immortalised by George Orwell in his book “The Road to Wigan Pier”) have since been made a local heritage centre and cultural quarter. Increased retail development has encouraged ever greater levels of traffic in recent years, access made easy by the town’s lying at the meeting point of the A49 and A577. Those two A roads in turn link to the M6, M61 and M58.
