Warehousing in East Midlands
Many warehouse companies can be found in the East Midlands. Warehousing in this area is
popular due to the central location. As its name suggests, East Midlands is a region in the east of England covering the areas of Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and most of Lincolnshire. The exact definition of “East Midlands” has been used more loosely in some contexts to cover wider areas such as the City of Peterborough (which was in Northamptonshire until boundary changes saw it become part of Cambridgeshire), Burton upon Trent, Uttoxeter and the wider, northern regions of Lincolnshire.

Even more than most regions, the East Midland’s industry relies on its transport links. Logistics employs 9% of the working population and traffic is growing faster than in any other region of the UK (growth stands at 2% per year) with 140,000 heavy goods vehicle movements every day. This is largely due to the area’s central location.

The M1 (part of E13), the UK’s first true motorway, serves as a major north-south connection for the country and connects all of the county towns in the East Midlands save Lincoln. Equally important is the A1 (part of E15) to the east links London and Edinburgh. It also supplies much of the UK’s agricultural production and is the principle link to east coast ports such as Newcastle upon Tyne. The region’s infrastructure has been criticised for its inability to keep up with the escalating traffic levels. Both the A1 and A46 (especially around Newark) are often congested. In an effort to alleviate this, work is currently under way to turn the A46 into a dual carriageway linking the M1 and A1 by 2012. A further trunk road, the A43, connects the region with southern England. Not being such an important transport link, roads running east to west (i.e. the A57, A52 and A47) are almost exclusively single carriageways. The A14 (a dual carriageway and part of the E24) does run through the northernmost part of Northamptonshire.
The region’s major airport – East Midlands Airport – is in North West Leicestershire and is accessible from junctions 23a and 24 of the M1. It serves the three main cities of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham, and is mainly a hub for Ryanair and bmibaby. The region boasts an impressive number of smaller airports, including Bruntingthorpe Aeordrome, Hucknall Airfield, Leicester Airport, Nottingham Airport (which is actually at Tollerton), Retford Gamston Airport and Sywell Aerodrome. EasyJet operates all of its routes from the nearby Robin Hood Airport.
Though the waters may have declined as major industrial routes over the last century or more – notably, Boston and Sutton Bridge are the region’s only ports – the Trent is still used to transport goods to the Humber.
The Trent is a navigable river, and is used to transport goods to the Humber, and passes by many.
